The United States Congress has passed Medicare Improvements for Patients and
Providers (Act of 2008 H.R. 6331). The Act, for the first time ever, provides
financial incentives to physicians who adopt electronic prescribing. The Act will
increase Medicare payments to physicians who regularly utilize electronic
prescribing by two (2) percent in 2009 and 2010, then slightly less over the next
three (3) years. Physicians who do not use the technology would see their payments
cut by one (1) percent in 2011, and a maximum of up to two (2) percent for 2013 and
beyond.
